Drink of the Week: The Bee’s Knee

This bad boy of a cocktail dates back to the prohibition in the United States. Yes, Indeed. The days of bath tub gin and moonshine.

To mask the flavor of these noxious spirits, plenty of strong flavors and sweeteners were added to mix. But since the good-old days of prohibition are over, we are free to explore some of the sweet zests.

The Bee’s Knees was among those drinks with a bad reputation but yet delicious and easy to make. It is noteworthy to know that it requires some pre-preparation since we will be making honey syrup; add equal amount of honey and hot water, and stir until the honey dissolves, then refrigerate it.

Once cool, crush some ice and mix some gin, fresh lemon juice and the honey syrup into a cocktail shaker for a few minutes. If you do not own one, then use the next best thing: an empty jar. Close the lid and get shakin´.  Pour into a champagne coupe or drink directly from the jar. After all you are the boss of your own alcohol laws.


  • 1 and ¼ shots of gin
  • 1/2 DL fresh lemon juice
  • 1 DL honey syrup
