Tesla Just Unveiled the ‘Fastest Production Car Ever’

“The point of doing this is to give a hardcore smackdown to gasoline cars.”

The much awaited Tesla supercar is finally here. Touted as the ‘fastest production car ever made,’ the Roadster certainly does not disappoint. It goes from 0 to 60 in 1.9 seconds, and comes equipped with a 200kWh battery pack that boasts an impressive 620-mile (over 1000 kilometers) range on a single charge.

Tesla’s head honcho Elon Musk made the announcement at their facility in Hawthorne, California in front of an ecstatic crowd. Musk, with his usual bravado, proclaimed that the second coming of the Roadster is meant to “give a hardcore smackdown to gasoline cars.” The new Roadster gives Tesla a renewed shot at penetrating the high-end sports car market. In 2008, it launched its first battery electric vehicle (BEV) sports car (also called the Roadster), but was considered a disappointment due to numerous quality issues. Elon Musk admitted that the first Roadster “broke down all the time” – something that Tesla is hoping to avoid this time around.

As you might expect, the Tesla Roadster will not come cheap. The base model has an asking price of $200,000, which can be yours for a measly $50,000 deposit, or you can fork over $250,000 for the limited Founders Series. The production for the new Roadster does not start until 2020.
